Chi Alpha Sigma inducts more than 7,500 student-athletes in 2019-20 academic year

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- More than 7,500 student-athletes were welcomed into Chi Alpha Sigma during the 2019-20 academic year, the National College Athlete Honor Society announced today.

The organization saw a total of 7,520 student-athletes representing four-year institutions from across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, and USCAA recognized for their combined athletic and academic achievement over the last year. The 2019-20 mark tops the 2018-19 totals of 6,724 by nearly 800 inductees.

Though the global coronavirus pandemic greatly impacted the structure of many induction ceremonies throughout the spring, Chi Alpha Sigma chapters were steadfast in their commitment to celebrating student-athletes.

“We are so proud of the way our chapters showcased their resolve and creativity over the last several months,” Chi Alpha Sigma Executive Director Kellen Wells-Mangold said. “When in-person induction ceremonies were no longer able to be held, we saw more videos, photos, and press releases celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of our student-athletes than ever before. It was a wonderful and important reminder of why all of us in college athletics do what we do.”

Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only national scholar-athlete society to honor four-year collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full-time semester, and earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average.

Membership renewals for the 2020-21 academic year are now open for active Chi Alpha Sigma chapters, while institutions interested in starting a chapter can apply here. Advisors, student-athletes, and supporters can follow Chi Alpha Sigma on Facebook and Twitter.

The National College Athlete Honor Society, Inc., known as Chi Alpha Sigma, is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1996. Chi Alpha Sigma works with state chapters to recognize college student-athletes who succeed in their sport and in the classroom.
